Metrologic Barcode Scanner Differences
A Metrologic barcode scanner is essentially a light emitting device that can be used to read information from a
barcode. They are generally attached to a laptop or computer with a RS-232 or PS2 to collect data which is stored
either for storage or processing. Barcode scanners are used primarily in the retail and production industries.
Barcode scanners have been available on the market for several years with new versions available each year.
There is a wide price range starting at $50 up to thousands of dollars. Therefore, how can one choose a barcode
scanner that's right for him or herself? There are two things you need to consider before choosing a barcode
scanner.
First there are two classes of barcode scanners, laser based and image based. The image based barcode scanner
uses a camera which is embedded within the barcode scanner. The camera captures the images then processes them
using complex image techniques to decipher the barcodes. The laser based barcode scanner uses mirrors and lenses
that read the individual barcodes. Laser barcode scanners are the most expensive with image based being the least
expensive.
Both classes of barcode scanners have their advantages and disadvantages. One advantage with the image based
barcode scanner is that is does not have moving parts making it more resistant if dropped or knocked over. Laser
barcode scanners tend to wear out sooner because of the lenses. An image based barcode scanner has a scanning
distance of 4 inches to 10 inches which is a much shorter distance compared to a laser barcode scanner which has a
scanning distance of around 24 inches.
An advantage a laser barcode scanner has over an image based barcode scanner is that it has a wider scanning
range. However there have been several improvements made with both the image based and the laser barcode scanners.
Several manufacturers claim that their image based scanners have a scanning distance of up to 24 inches.
There are several questions you should ask before buying a barcode scanner. For example what size scanner do you
require? Where will the barcode scanner be used (indoors, outdoors, warehouses, retail)? What is the exact scanning
distance that you will need? Will the barcode scanner be hand held or used hands free? What is the price range that
best suits your budget?
If you are someone that needs a barcode scanner to be used for long range scanning, then a laser barcode scanner
is going to be your best choice. If one needs a barcode scanner that will be used for short range scanning, then an
image based barcode scanner, like a CCD barcode scanner, is your best choice. Where you will be using the barcode
scanner is an important factor to consider.
For example if the barcode scanner is going to be used outside in the open air, or in a similar environment
where it is at risk of being dropped or knocked over then an image based barcode scanner is the best choice. If the
environment is more along the lines of a retail shop or similar indoor environment then a laser barcode scanner is
going to be your best option. There is a huge selection of barcode scanners that are available on the market
today.
To choose the right barcode scanner that best suits your needs search online for barcode manufacturers. Symbol

needs of your business.
